Dear CCSD 46 Community,

As our year draws to a close, I extend enormous gratitude to the families, students, and staff members who make CCSD 46 such a very special place. I feel thankful every single day to be a part of this amazing community.

Celebrations and Goodbyes

Earlier this month, I let you know that ten of our outstanding educators had been nominated as Lake County Educators of the Year in various categories. Today, I’m thrilled to share that Ms. Jessica Achtor, a Park Campus MultiLingual teacher, was honored as the winning Lake County Teacher of the Year in the Teacher of Diverse Learners category. We are so proud to have Ms. Achtor working with our students!

Speaking of outstanding staff members, recently Ms. Christina Payton, Frederick School Dean, was highlighted in the D46 Inspires Podcast! Visit our website here to listen to a student share why Ms. Payton is so special to her. There will be a couple of other staff members highlighted on the D46 Inspires podcast before the school year ends, so be sure to check back next week!

E-Learning Days

During the 2022-2023 school year, CCSD 46 utilized an E-Learning Day due to predicted inclement weather. Only one E-Learning Day was used, and this occurred on February 16, 2023. In April, we conducted a Thought Exchange to gather feedback from the community about the E-Learning Day in order to make plans for the future. There was significant participation in this survey, with a total of 535 responses.

Of the 535 respondents, approximately 85% identified themselves as parents/guardians, and the rest identified themselves as staff members. In total, there were 466 thoughts shared, and 10,047 ratings.

Two quantitative questions were asked:

 1)  Please identify the extent to which you agree or disagree with this statement: I would like CCSD 46 to use E-Learning Days instead of Snow Days as long as ample warning is given.

60% of respondents strongly agreed or agreed with this statement,  34% strongly disagreed or agreed, and 6% were neutral.

2)  How satisfied were you with the E-Learning Day?

61% of respondents indicated a score of 7 -10 (with 10 meaning Extremely Satisfied), 19% indicated a score of 4 – 6, and 20% indicated a score of 0-3.

The following question was asked in this Thought Exchange:
What successes and challenges did you and/or your family experience related to E-Learning on February 16, 2023?

A wide range of successes and challenges were identified. For some, the transition to E-Learning was seamless, with no technical issues, and students glad to participate. Others found it difficult to manage multiple schedules while working. Some parents/guardians found it challenging to provide support for their children, and others were concerned about the amount of screen time exposure for their children. Some stakeholders commented that E-Learning is challenging for younger students and students who need extra support to learn. Despite these challenges, many stakeholders found that E-Learning was a positive experience, with students able to continue their education from home and the school year not needing to be extended. There were also comments about the structure of the day, with suggestions made that including more asynchronous time would be beneficial. Notably, there were extremely positive comments about the work of the CCSD 46 teachers during the E-Learning Day. As well, some respondents commented that they would prefer for children to be able to enjoy Snow Days instead of attending school with an E-Learning Day. Finally, comments were made about the amount of time provided for families and staff members to prepare for E-Learning, with some respondents satisfied with the notification schedule, and others dissatisfied. You can view a slideshow regarding the feedback presented at the May 3 Board of Education Meeting here.

Based upon this feedback, CCSD 46 will plan to use E-Learning Days in most cases of inclement weather as long as staff and students are aware of the possibility of an E-Learning Day prior to the event and can prepare for E-Learning. However, more asynchronous learning will be incorporated into the day. This will allow students to step away from their devices, and some families may choose to enjoy the weather conditions during such asynchronous time and complete work at a later time. Also, it is possible that having several days of inclement weather may mean that CCSD 46 might have a Snow Day instead of an E-Learning Day.

Student Activities Donation Link

We are pleased to share that the district has launched a student activity fee donation link on the homepage of the district website. This donation link will allow community members and parents to provide a helping hand to CCSD 46 students with financial need to take part in extracurricular activities. All donations will be tax deductible.
