Our new website has been in the works for quite some time, and is scheduled to launch mid-morning next Wednesday, January 25, 2023. We do not expect there to be any gaps in website availability, but we do ask for the grace and understanding of our community in the unexpected event that our website does go down for a little while during the transition next Wednesday. Please keep in mind that while our main web address will remain www.d46.org, if you currently have school or other pages bookmarked, those URLs will be changing. Of course, you will find much of the content that you are accustomed to seeing on our website, and this includes links to all of our school sites, all of which are also brand new! In addition, our new district website will include these notable features: -Easily found Quick Links -Dedicated Parent/Guardian, Staff, and Student content areas -Dedicated News page -Searchable Staff Directory -Financial Dashboard page -School Safety page -Community Connections page -Social Media page -School Stories We are especially excited about the School Stories buttons! These will be brief audio or video files which will help our community get to know us better, and can be found at the bottom of the homepage. When we launch next week, the featured School Stories will come from the D46 Inspires Podcast. This wonderful celebration of educators was launched by Katie O’Brien, one of our outstanding teacher leaders. The student tells us, “She helped me grow as a learner!” Earlier in the year, Ms. O’Brien interviewed Ms. Amy Gluck, our new Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, and Board of Education Vice President Dr. Stephen Mack. You can also hear all of the inspiring stories from last school year. Thank you so much to Ms. O’Brien for bringing us this wonderful project, and for all of the educators who inspire us! We all owe a debt of gratitude to Ms. Leslie Armstrong, our Webmaster and Media Relations Specialist. Along with single-handedly maintaining our current (“old”) website, Ms. Armstrong has worked tirelessly to move content into our new site. We are thrilled with the results, and think that you will be, too. I also note that this is a “living, breathing document”, and therefore we will be continuously updating it. In the midst of celebrating special days and marking milestones, I hope that our stakeholders are also able to pause now and again to consider all that we have accomplished together since August. I know that I am immensely proud of our school community. Feedback Opportunities Thank you to the 535 stakeholders who participated in our recent ThoughtExchange about ELearning Days! There were 466 comments and over 10,000 ratings! We are still reviewing the feedback and will be getting back to our community soon regarding the themes that emerged along with plans moving forward. This is exactly the information that we needed in order to plan for the future. Thank you! We hope that we will also have robust feedback for this Communications Review. As part of our commitment to improving communication with our school community, we invite you to participate in this brief survey, which was created in Google Forms and should take no more than 5 - 10 minutes to complete. The survey will close at 5 pm on Wednesday, May 17. This survey will help us better understand your preferences and needs when it comes to communication from the school district. We want to make sure that we are providing you with the information you need in a timely and efficient manner. Your feedback will be invaluable in helping us achieve this goal. Your responses will be anonymous, and we encourage you to be open and honest in your feedback. This information will be used to help us identify areas where we can improve our communication, as well as areas where we are excelling. We would like to stress the importance of your participation in this survey. Your feedback is vital to ensuring that we are meeting the needs of our school community. Staff Appreciation and Educators of the Year As we celebrate Staff Appreciation Week here in CCSD 46, we want to take a moment to express our gratitude to the incredible staff who work tirelessly to make our school a wonderful place for our children to learn and grow. Our staff is made up of exceptional individuals who go above and beyond every day to ensure that our students are safe, supported, and engaged in their learning. From our teachers and administrators to our custodians, administrative assistants, and program assistants, every member of our staff plays a vital role in creating a positive and nurturing environment for our students. We encourage parents/guardians and students to take some time this week to show their appreciation for our staff in any way they can. A written note of thanks, or simply saying "thank you" when encountering staff members in the halls helps anyone feel seen! We would like to express our sincere appreciation to our staff for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to our students. We are so fortunate to have such an amazing group of educators and staff at our school, and we are grateful for all that they do to support our students! We are also thrilled to announce that this evening, ten CCSD 46 educators will be honored at a special dinner and ceremony hosted by the Lake County Regional Office of Education. The educators named have been identified by peers, or parents, or administrators as being exceptional examples of devoted professionals who make a difference for our students, families, other staff members, and school community as a whole. full4935superintendentDr. Lynn Glickman2/3/23 Dear CCSD 46 Community, Equity Action Plan (EAP) At the February 1, 2023, Board of Education meeting, our District Equity Leadership Team proudly presented an Equity Action Plan (EAP) to the Board and community. This EAP was created by a wide variety of district stakeholders over the past several months and was formed in response to the data collected through the Equity Audit conducted during the 21-22 school year. The plan will be implemented over the next 18 months, and includes 5 strands: Systems: To ensure a systemic and continuous development toward advancing equity within all policies, processes, procedures, initiatives, decision-making and fiscal responsibilities. Teaching & Learning: To intentionally embed equity-driven pedagogy in curriculum, resources, instructional approaches, use and consideration of assessments, and academic programming for the purpose of advancing equity among all students. Student Voice, Climate & Culture: To consistently seek students' feedback and experiences on organizational culture and climate. Professional Learning: To provide a continuum of professional learning and growth opportunities for all staff in pursuit of educational equity. Family & Community as Agency: To partner with families and the community for authentic opportunities to serve the students, the school, and district. Equity and Inclusion Committee The Family & Community as Agency strand of our Equity Action Plan includes the ongoing work of our Equity & Inclusion Committee, which is a small group of CCSD 46 staff members, administrators, and community members. The following is the Purpose Statement drafted by the committee at the time of its inception in 2016: The purpose of the committee is to support CCSD 46 in achieving educational equity, through an inclusive culture and culturally responsive teaching practices, where all students receive the educational resources and rigor they need at the right moment in their education, and students’ needs are not going unmet due to race, ethnicity, dominant language, disability, gender, sexual orientation, religion, family background, and/or family income. The CCSD 46 Equity and Inclusion Committee meets approximately monthly, often on Monday evenings, usually virtually. We are currently seeking new members. Individuals who are interested in being a part of the committee can apply for membership by completing this application form by Monday, February 13, 2023. Please note that individuals who are not chosen for the committee will have other opportunities to engage in important equity work within the school district. 2023-2024 School Year Calendar Draft A draft of the 2023-2024 School Year Calendar was discussed at the February 1, 2023, Board of Education meeting. The 2023-2024 Calendar was drafted as a collaborative effort between the administration and GFT and PSRP union leaders. As is always the case, efforts were made to align the calendar as much as possible with the High School District 127 calendar for the convenience of our families. This year, in response to questions that came from an Equity & Inclusion Committee meeting, the Calendar Committee decided to poll stakeholders on their thoughts regarding closing school on religious holidays. 573 individuals responded to the survey. Using the ThoughtExchange platform, families and staff members were asked the following question: How does our current school calendar affect your observation of religious holidays that are important to you? What should be considered regarding observations of religious holidays when developing the school calendar? The following are the highest-ranking answers that were responsive to that question: The school calendar matches our religious needs. It’s more important that the D46 and D127 calendars match. Families with multiple children should have the opportunity to be together at the same time. Some holidays are not observed by the district, and I have witnessed my coworkers having to take days off to observe their holidays. No one should ever have to use their personal or sick days for an observed holiday no matter the religion! At this time, the holidays that I celebrate are days school is closed. Quantitative data was also collected through the ThoughtExchange, as respondents were also asked to use checkboxes to answer the following question: Our family’s cultural or religious background would be greatly supported if school would be closed on the following holidays, and I hope that closing on these days will be considered. Here is the data collected through the survey: Good Friday - 59% (315 respondents) Rosh Hashanah - 9% (51 respondents) Yom Kippur - 8% (47 respondents) Diwali - 6% (32 respondents) Eid al-Fitr - 3% (18 respondents) Eid al-Adha - 3% (18 respondents) Lunar New Year Day - 3% (18 respondents) Greek Orthodox Easter - 2% (13 respondents) Also, 10% (56 respondents) indicated “Other”, and 24% (131 respondents) checked “My family does not observe any of these holidays.” The calendar committee discussed these findings, and agreed on the following recommendations: The most commonly requested school closure for a holiday was Good Friday. This day is embedded as a closed day for both CCSD 46 and D127 through the schedule of Spring Break in the 23-24 school year Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur were the next most commonly requested school closures for holidays. Rosh Hashanah falls on a weekend during the 23-24 school year. Yom Kippur occurs during the work week, and, like D127, CCSD 46 schools will be closed on this day Diwali was the next commonly requested school closure for a holiday. Diwali falls on a weekend during the 23-24 school year. It is unlikely that CCSD 46 will close on this day in future years. However, if the holiday falls on a school day in the future, schools will be aware that there may be students with excused absences for religious reasons and will work to avoid scheduling special events on that day Regarding rankings for other religious holidays, as well as the ThoughtExchange comment above about employees taking time off and another highly ranked thought: Regardless of days off, staff and students should not be penalized for taking off to observe a holiday: As per School Code, and as identified in our Student Handbook, student absences due to observance of any religious holidays are already identified as Excused Absences. As per collective bargaining agreements, staff members are able to be absent for up to two religious leave days without deductions from allotted paid time off. If necessary, they are also able to use up to two sick leave days in order to be absent for an additional two days for religious observance. The Calendar Committee was glad to engage in this conversation about equity and will continue to assess our school closure plans in future years. The Board of Education will vote on the 2023-2024 school calendar at their February 15, 2023 meeting. The calendar draft can be found here. Black History Month February is Black History month! A continuación figuran las respuestas más destacadas que respondieron a esa pregunta: El calendario escolar coincide con nuestras necesidades religiosas. Es más importante que los calendarios D46 y D127 coincidan. Las familias con varios hijos deben tener la oportunidad de estar juntas al mismo tiempo. Algunos días festivos no son observados por el distrito, y he sido testigo de cómo mis compañeros de trabajo tienen que tomar días libres para observar sus días festivos. Nadie debería tener que usar sus días personales o por enfermedad para observar una fiesta, sea cual sea su religión! En este momento, los días festivos que celebro son los días en que la escuela está cerrada. Estos son los datos recogidos en la encuesta: Viernes Santo - 59% (315 encuestados) Rosh Hashaná - 9% (51 encuestados) Yom Kippur - 8% (47 encuestados) Diwali - 6% (32 encuestados) Eid al-Fitr - 3% (18 encuestados) Eid al-Adha - 3% (18 encuestados) Año Nuevo Lunar - 3% (18 encuestados) Pascua griega ortodoxa - 2% (13 encuestados) Además, el 10% (56 encuestados) indicó "Otros", y el 24% (131 encuestados) marcó "Mi familia no celebra ninguna de estas fiestas". El comité del calendario debatió estas conclusiones y acordó las siguientes recomendaciones: El día festivo más solicitado fue el Viernes Santo. Este día está incluido como día cerrado para CCSD 46 y D127 a través del horario de vacaciones de primavera en el año escolar 23-24. Rosh Hashanah y Yom Kippur fueron los siguientes días festivos más solicitados. Rosh Hashaná cae en fin de semana durante el año escolar 23-24. Yom Kippur ocurre durante la semana laboral, y, como D127, CCSD 46 escuelas estarán cerradas en este día. Diwali fue el siguiente día festivo en el que se solicitó el cierre de las escuelas. Sin embargo, si el día festivo cae en un día escolar en el futuro, las escuelas serán conscientes de que puede haber estudiantes con ausencias justificadas por razones religiosas, y trabajarán para evitar la programación de eventos especiales en ese día. En cuanto a la clasificación de otras fiestas religiosas, así como el comentario de ThoughtExchange anterior sobre los empleados que se toman tiempo libre y otro pensamiento muy valorado: Independientemente de los días libres, el personal y los alumnos no deben ser penalizados por ausentarse para observar una festividad: De acuerdo con el Código Escolar, y cómo se identifica en nuestro Manual del Estudiante, las ausencias de los estudiantes debido a la observancia de cualquier festividad religiosa ya se identifican como ausencias justificadas. De acuerdo con los convenios colectivos, los miembros del personal pueden ausentarse hasta dos días por motivos religiosos sin que se les descuente del tiempo libre remunerado asignado. En caso necesario, también pueden utilizar hasta dos días de baja por enfermedad para ausentarse otros dos días por motivos religiosos. El Comité del Calendario se complace en haber participado en esta conversación sobre la equidad y seguirá evaluando nuestros planes de cierre de escuelas en los próximos años.
