Dear CCSD 46 Community,

As our school day nears its end, we are sharing the questions that we have been receiving about today’s unverified security threat, and providing answers to those questions.

Q: What exactly was the unsubstantiated threat, and how did the police ultimately decide that it was not credible?

A: Throughout this experience, we have shared all of the information that we have had. First, we received a message from Grayslake Police that stated that there had been an “unsubstantiated threat” that a “school shooting would take place.” That message also stated, “there is currently no credible or verifiable threat.” Then, this morning, after some students were already at school, or en route to school, we received a message from Grayslake Police that stated that the threat was “becoming even less credible and has nothing to do with Grayslake.” We reached back out to the police department, seeking more information, but were told that there was no information for public release. The police stated, “The detectives began investigating further and it was confirmed as not credible, and the original threat was determined to not be directed at Grayslake.” In the best interests of community transparency, we have shared all of the information that our law enforcement partners have provided to us. 

Q: Was the unsubstantiated threat for November 2 or November 3?

A: It was for today, November 2. We understand that there was some confusing language in our first message early this morning, and we apologize for that.

Q: Why was onsite school held? Why didn’t we have E-Learning instead?

A: Sadly, threats on schools and other public entities are more and more common. The police work quickly to identify if they are credible, and we were told from the outset that this one was not. If we had been told that the threat was credible, we would have canceled school. In that case, we would have had an Emergency Day, not an E-Learning Day, as, per our protocols, students and staff would not have had enough warning to ensure that student devices were at home and that teaching plans could be made. An Emergency Day would have had to be made up at the end of the year. 

These decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. Based on the updated information from our law enforcement partners, we elected to hold school with increased police presence at all buildings and to update the community. 

Q: If the threat was not credible, why alert the public at all? Why have police on site? Why did you end up keeping students in for recess and P.E.?

A: We shared the information for transparency. We sought a police presence because we knew that this would make some people feel more comfortable. Similarly, we kept students in for recess and P.E. because we were receiving this request and doing so seemed to make some members of our community feel more comfortable. While we recognize that may make some individuals feel more comfortable it may also make others feel more anxious.

Q:  We have learned that Grayslake North has canceled after school activities today. Why didn’t CCSD 46 do the same?

A: The after school activities cancelation for Grayslake North was due to a water main repair on the north side of Grayslake and therefore unrelated to the unsubstantiated threat to security. 

At CCSD 46, we always take any threat seriously in response to any risk to the safety and well-being of students and staff and utilize supports such as increased police presence, constant 2-way communication with law enforcement, and notifying parents and staff. We will continue to do so with transparency and as quickly as possible whenever we are notified of potential threats to security.

Estimada comunidad CCSD 46,

Como nuestro día escolar se acerca a su fin, estamos compartiendo las preguntas que hemos estado recibiendo acerca de la amenaza de seguridad no verificada de hoy, y proporcionar respuestas a esas preguntas.

P: ¿En qué consistía exactamente la amenaza no fundamentada y cómo decidió finalmente la policía que no era creíble?

R: A lo largo de esta experiencia, hemos compartido toda la información que hemos tenido. En primer lugar, recibimos un mensaje de la policía de Grayslake que afirmaba que había habido una “amenaza no fundamentada” de que “se iba a llevar a cabo un tiroteo en la escuela”. Ese mensaje también decía: “actualmente no hay ninguna amenaza creíble o verificable”. Luego, esta mañana, después de que algunos estudiantes ya estaban en la escuela, o en camino a la escuela, recibimos un mensaje de la policía de Grayslake que decía que la amenaza era “cada vez menos creíble y no tiene nada que ver con Grayslake.” Volvimos a ponernos en contacto con el departamento de policía en busca de más información, pero nos dijeron que no había información para hacer pública. La policía declaró: “Los detectives comenzaron a investigar más a fondo y se confirmó que no era creíble y se determinó que la amenaza original no estaba dirigida a Grayslake”. En el mejor interés de la transparencia de la comunidad, hemos compartido toda la información que nuestros colaboradores policiales nos han proporcionado.

P: ¿La amenaza sin fundamento era para el 2 o el 3 de Noviembre?

R: Era para hoy, 2 de Noviembre. Entendemos que nuestro primer mensaje de esta mañana era confuso y pedimos disculpas por ello.

P: ¿Por qué se suspendieron las clases presenciales? ¿Por qué no tuvimos E-Learning en su lugar?

R: Lamentablemente, las amenazas contra escuelas y otras entidades públicas son cada vez más frecuentes. La policía trabaja rápidamente para identificar si son creíbles, y desde el principio se nos dijo que ésta no lo era. Si nos hubieran dicho que la amenaza era creíble, habríamos cancelado las clases. En ese caso, habríamos tenido un Día de Emergencia, no un Día de E-Learning, ya que, según nuestros protocolos, los estudiantes y el personal no habrían tenido suficiente aviso para asegurarse de que los dispositivos de los estudiantes estuvieran en casa y que se pudieran hacer planes de enseñanza. Un día de emergencia habría tenido que recuperarse al final del curso. 

Estas decisiones se toman caso por caso. Basándonos en la información actualizada de nuestros colaboradores policiales, decidimos mantener las clases con una mayor presencia policial en todos los edificios, e informar a la comunidad.

P: Si la amenaza no era creíble, ¿por qué alertar a la población? ¿Por qué acudió la policía? ¿Por qué mantuvieron a los alumnos en el recreo y en educación física?

R: Compartimos la información en interés de la transparencia. Buscamos la presencia policial porque sabíamos que así algunas personas se sentirían más cómodas. Del mismo modo, mantuvimos a los alumnos en el recreo y en educación física porque recibimos esta petición y parecía que así algunos miembros de nuestra comunidad se sentían más cómodos. Aunque reconocemos que esto puede hacer que algunas personas se sientan más cómodas, también puede hacer que otras se sientan más ansiosas.

P: Nos hemos enterado que Grayslake North ha cancelado las actividades después de clases hoy. ¿Por qué CCSD 46 no hizo lo mismo?

R: La cancelación de las actividades después de clases para Grayslake North se debió a una reparación de la tubería principal de agua en el lado norte de Grayslake y por lo tanto no está relacionado con la amenaza sin fundamento a la seguridad. 

En CCSD 46, siempre tomamos en serio cualquier amenaza en respuesta al riesgo para la seguridad y el bienestar de los estudiantes y el personal, y utilizar apoyos tales como el aumento de la presencia policial, la comunicación constante de 2 vías con las fuerzas del orden, y notificar a los padres y el personal. Seguiremos haciéndolo con transparencia y con la mayor rapidez posible siempre que se nos notifique de posibles amenazas a la seguridad.
