Dear CCSD 46 Community,
Below are updates regarding all of our CCSD 46 schools.
Frederick
Unfortunately, Frederick students and staff will need to continue with E-Learning tomorrow, January 19, 2024. The fire repression (sprinkler) system remains frozen, and the boilers are not providing consistent heat in the building. We are very sorry that these facility concerns have impacted Frederick staff, students, and families for a full week. Future communications regarding the E-Learning schedule, as well as information as it develops regarding school next week, will come directly to Frederick families from Mr. Goschy.
Grayslake Middle School
Yesterday, we were informed by our contractors that due to the scope of the repairs that will need to be made at GMS, we will not be able to reopen that building for several weeks. The current estimate is 4-6 weeks. I know that this is difficult news to process, but I’m glad that I’m able to share this news while also sharing a plan moving forward.
On Tuesday, January 23, 2024, we are opening “GMS East”! While GMS is being restored, school will temporarily be held at University Center of Lake County, which is on the College of Lake County (CLC) campus (1200 University Center Drive, Grayslake). This is a magnificent facility which is filled with school amenities such as spacious classrooms, a beautiful auditorium, a health center, and a kitchen, all of which will allow onsite learning to continue for students.
What will happen next? Below is a schedule for the next few days:
Friday, January 19, 2024 — GMS teachers and students will continue with E-Learning, as was announced yesterday. While teachers and students are learning together, administrators and some other staff members will continue the planning process that will allow school to start as smoothly as possible.
Monday, January 22, 2024 — This will be an Emergency/No School Day for GMS students. All GMS staff will be at University Center (GMS East) in order to prepare for onsite learning to start. As we are only “closing” one school that day, this day will not need to be made up at the end of the school year.
Tuesday, January 23, 2024 — School will begin at GMS East!
Our team is currently working through many details, including bussing, food service, class schedule adjustments, and movement of supplies. We appreciate your patience as plans continue to be made. I’m enormously proud of and grateful for the hard working team members who are focused on creating a smooth transition to GMS East! As you can imagine, quite a lot of work goes into opening a new school, and we are developing that plan over a matter of days.
We are also extremely grateful to the staff at University Center, who have been generous with their time and expertise. The team at University Center is accustomed to having middle schoolers onsite, as North Chicago School District 187 used the space in the Fall of 2022 when that district temporarily needed a space for middle schoolers.
GMS families, more information will come to you directly from Mr. Smith. You can expect a message by tomorrow afternoon from Mr. Smith, and then more messages as details continue to develop. Please understand that GMS administrators are hard at work on planning, and therefore may be slower than usual to respond to messages. However, they will be sure to answer questions prior to the opening of GMS East. Your patience will be appreciated.
Again, I acknowledge that this is surprising news. However, I’m pleased that we will be able to use the beautiful building at University Center, just minutes away from GMS, in order to keep learning going for our GMS Panthers.
All Other Buildings
Onsite learning at our other schools restarted with happy students and staff today. We do still have a few trouble spots in our schools, with some leaks and colder areas in some buildings. However, in all of those cases, students and staff were able to relocate to other areas of the buildings, and learning continued. It is not surprising that our students were simply glad to be back in person with their teachers, even if they were not in their usual classrooms.

Escuela Frederick
Desafortunadamente, los estudiantes y el personal de Frederick tendrán que continuar con E-Learning mañana, 19 de enero de 2024. Grayslake Middle School

Nuestro equipo está trabajando actualmente a través de muchos detalles, incluyendo autobuses, servicio de alimentos, ajustes de horario de clases, y el movimiento de los suministros. Agradecemos su paciencia, ya que los preparativos continúan. ¡Estoy enormemente orgulloso y agradecido por los miembros del equipo de trabajo duro que se centran en la creación de una transición sin problemas a GMS East! El aprendizaje en nuestras otras escuelas se reanudó con los estudiantes felices y el personal de hoy. Todavía tenemos algunos puntos problemáticos en nuestras escuelas, con algunas fugas y zonas más frías en algunos edificios. Sin embargo, en todos esos casos, los estudiantes y el personal pudieron ser reubicados en otras zonas de los edificios, y el aprendizaje continuó. No es de extrañar que nuestros alumnos estuvieran sencillamente contentos de volver a estar en persona con sus profesores, aunque no estuvieran en sus aulas habituales.
